Nitrate contaminants are commonly found in groundwater, especially in rural areas where water sources are more likely to come into contact with fertilizers, septic systems, and manure storage.

Nitrate Contaminants in Water

Although some levels of nitrates in water are normal and occur naturally, it becomes a problem when human activities cause normal levels to rise above what is considered to be acceptable.

Municipal water sources are tested regularly for nitrates to ensure the drinking water distributed to its residents is free of the tasteless and odorless substance. If elevated levels are found, affected communities are notified and steps are taken to identify the potential sources of the contaminant.

This recently happened in Columbus, Ohio, where the city issued a warning to residents to avoid consuming tap water until the nitrate contaminant was identified and treated. Residents were warned not to boil the water because doing so would actually concentrate the nitrates.

Advice for Homeowners

Those most susceptible to the effects of nitrates in water are infants and pregnant women.

If you think your drinking water may be at risk for high levels of nitrates, you should have your water tested right away to confirm. Well-water users could be at a higher risk for nitrate contamination and should test their water regularly.

A water filtration system can be a great, lasting solution to high nitrate problems. Culligan’s water filtration solutions can target and remove water contaminants, like nitrates. Contact your local Culligan Man today to have your water tested.
