How is Hard Water Hurting Your Home?

Ask any Culligan Man why a water softener is right for you, and he’ll explain why it’s not only right for you, but also for your home.

He is the expert, after all.

Your Culligan water dealer is intimately familiar with the type, hardness and any special characteristics of local water conditions in your community, in order to understand which water treatment solutions work best.

When it comes to protecting your home and its water-using appliances, the best defense is a water softener. The Water Quality Association (WQA) agrees. In fact, a study in 2009 confirmed it.

“Water softeners can rightfully be positioned as one of the very highest energy-saving and best ‘green’ technology appliances that a homeowner can own,” Joe Harrison, P.E., CWS-VI, technical director for the WQA, said of the study in an article by Water Quality Products Magazine.

But what did the study tell us?

Of all the appliances tested – water heaters, low-flow showerheads and faucets, dishwashers, and clothes washers – hard water much more rapidly harmed the effectiveness of the appliances.

Over a 9-month period, the efficiency of all the water heaters tested with soft water remained constant, while those tested with hard water didn’t even last until the end of the test. The pipes and valves become blocked with scale before the test period came to a close. Similar scale buildup and clogging occurred with each of the appliances tested with hard water, while the soft water counterparts remained effective and efficient.

According to the study, showerheads on soft water maintained brilliant luster and full flow throughout the study, while the showerheads on hard water lost 75 percent of the flow rate in less than 18 months.

You can see the trend. But the gist is this – soft water is going to significantly improve the usefulness and life of your appliances. There is no question.

With the results of the study, the WQA and your Culligan Man are asking you to FEEL the benefits of soft water:

Function: No clogged faucets Efficiency: Appliances are more energy-efficient Extended Life: Appliances and plumbing last longer Look: Fixtures and appliances won’t tarnish or stain
